L'école ESPERA Sbarro Montbéliard.

Sbarro Orbital Wheel or Hubless wheel, 1989. The idea In 1989, Franco Sbarro has surprised everyone by presenting his most amazing invention: the orbital wheel or the hubless wheel. The idea is very simple: the constraints that occur on a wheel are at ground level, on the outer periphery. A wheel without axis enables to support the vehicle at the lowest point. The center of gravity is lowered for better grip. The orbital wheel comprises two components : - A rotating part including the tyre, a centre-free rim and a brake ring; - A fixed part lies around the inner ring of the bearing to which are set linking triangles, steering rod and brake gripper. From theory to practice To achieve this orbital wheel, it needed a very large-diameter wheel bearing. Franco Sbarro asked a Swedish company specializing in bearings, SKF. Then, with Dominique Motta, Franco Sbarro founded the Sbarro Mottas Engineering will set up the program Osmos (Original Sbarro Mottas Orbital System) which will result in the presentation of the coupé Osmos and three spectacular motorcycles. The "orbitales" motorbikes More than the coupé Osmos, it was the motorbikes equipped with orbital wheel that made sensation. It must be said that the lack of a hub is more "visible" on two wheels than on a car. - The first motorbike, white, is probably the most pure. On right profile, nothing suggests any connection between the bike and its wheels; - The second motorbike, red, has a link arms visible on the front that hides the bottom of the wheel. At the rear, there is a classic wheel with a hub and chain; - The third motorcycle rather serves as a teaching tool. The body is suggested with metal wire, allowing a clear view of the whole link arm of the orbital wheel. Notet that another surprising vehicle was equipped later with orbital wheels : the Aero. This side-car, launched in 2000 to promote the watch inspired by the orbital wheel, made his reappearance in the Mondial de l'Automobile, Paris and in Essen in 2008.
"Franco Sbarro the italian inventor/ engineer who designed and built the first working hubless wheels (a patent now held by Globeholding in Geneva) produced these design sketches. Sbarro has built many working "rim rider" vehicles and at least two working rim rider motorcycles (above). A rim rider wheel is a wheel with no center hub, just a clean empty space. The Wheel itself is in essence the outer race of a very large bearing.
Franco Sbarro is the only designer that has employed this type of hubless wheel. Globeholding and their "Orbital Wheel" (or osomoswheel) appears to be agressively defending their intellectual property rights, so lets hope that means they have some great plans in the works."

Sbarro Bi-moto Scorpius, 2000. The originality of the Bi-moto Scorpius is that when the driver turns, it leans 25 degrees to the inside of the turn. Like a motorcycle. Thrills guaranteed! The originality of concept is that the shell of the car is not linked in a fixed and rigid to the front and rear tracks. At the rear parts fiberglass covering wheels are not attached to the body, allowing for freedom of movement. The comparison with the two wheels does not stop there: all the mechanical parts are borrowed directly from ... two Yamaha. There are therefore two four-cylinder engine of 1000 cm3 developing 130 horsepower, or... 8-cylinder, 2 liters and 260 horses. When you know that the device weighs only 500 kg, you will understand better what feelings mean! The interior is rather spartan, with two separate cockpits. One might expect to find a handlebar, but the Sbarro's students have opted for a steering wheel. The gearbox, issue also from the world of motorcycles, is sequential. The title of this website devoted to Sbarro is "Another vision of car." Nothing could better sum up the philosophy that has led to such a device. The bi-moto Scorpius has no equivalent vehicle and remains a unique and unusual. engine 8 cylinders (2 x 4 cylinders) Yamaha configuration rear displacement 2000 cc (2 x 1000 cc)5 valves per cylinder power 260 BHP transmission rear wheel drive gearbox sequential weight 500 kg max speed 300 kmh
